Public Safety Reminder From Sheriff Doug Baum
It has been brought to my attention that there may be some confusion when it comes to the Off Road Vehicle laws as they pertain to "Gators", "Rangers", "Argos", Gas Powered Golf Carts and other utility type vehicles.
All of these vehicles fall under the definition of an OFF ROAD VEHICLE. When these vehicles are used off your private property, they fall under the Off Road Vehicle laws.
These include:
- Registration
- Helmets or approved roll bars and safety belts
- Eye Protection
- Age of the operator
- Rules for use on state land or the local ordinance governing use on COUNTY ROADS in Montmorency County. the ordinance allows ORV's that are legal in all ways, to be operated at the extreme right hand edge of the "travel portion" (Not paved portion) of county roads. Speed limits, alcohol use, and valid driver's license / ORV safety certificate are just a few of the additional regulations.
- Restricted use times during deer season
- Other rules apply depending on where and when you use them
The laws can be read on the DNR website (www.michigan.gov/dnr) as well as in booklet form at all DNR offices. Information can also be obtained from the Michigan State Police website (www.michigan.gov/msp) by clicking on Frequently Asked Questions.
Let's all work together to promote safe and sober use of all vehicles!
